Day 2- Tuesday

Our first day of work was a very productive one. We were split into two groups. working a two different houses. House one is in the home stretch and we had two teams laying hardwood flooring and one steam working on the handrails for the back steps. At the second house groups worked on sheathing the back gable and siding.

Today's bloggers are Kyle Hair and George Nemtsev.

One work day down, four more to go. Now don't get me wrong, I love it. Hailey, as well as myself, felt extremely accomplished after today. Our job was to put together a set of handrails for the back steps along the left side of the house. I can't lie to you; at the beginning it was extremely frustrating. We wouldn't measure it right and we even had a drill bit snap on us. I don't know what we did after that but we fixed it. Once we got going, though, we didn't want to stop. Hailey and I wanted to continue working once we finished our food, which was brought to us by the wonderful people of "Mobile Loaves and Fishes". I'll tell ya those people are saints. Those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were DIVINE. The way the peanut butter was spread along the jelly...mmmm...if I could re-live a moment in my life....ok ok back on track. Anywho, we got the spindles all cut and fitted and just like that, the first of two rails were finished.

At the end of the work day, we all had a sing along. Hannah, accompanied by all the gals....and maybe, JUST MAYBE, I, sang along to songs on the radio ranging from "Breakeven" by The Script to "I Knew You Were Trouble" by the one and only T-Swizzle (Taylor Swift).

The AmeriCorps staff: Avery, Faith, Joe, and Josh were a HEEUGE help for us. I got to learn how to use a bone saw. It was pretty awesome. All in all, it was an amazing first day and I can't help but to try and fight the anticipation for tomorrow. We go one day at a time down here and honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I now hand it over to my right hand man George. George.....take it away.

Wow. Today was quite an experience. I haven't done that much physical labor since last summer. At first, installing hardwood flooring didn't seem like such a difficult but after doing the first line of hardwood and standing up, I felt 30 years older. The work was repetative and I kept on getting the flooring glue all over myself but at lunch, I just felt quite accomplished and relieved. Lunch was great and the people of "Mobile Loaves and Fishes" were absolutely brilliant and the food they brought us was great.
After lunch, the work seemed to go faster because Geralyn and I had gotten used to the process of putting in the lines of flooring. Unfortunately we didn't get to finish the room we were in but we got quite some work down. The feeling of accomplishment was slightly amplified at the end of the day and I realized that the pain of labor is only temporary but the feeling of accomplishment is more permanent. I'm sure tomorrow will bring even more labor but I'm ready for it. So until next time, goodnight and goodbye!
It was a very good first day. Please keep the prayers coming!

Fear not - it was not all work and no play!
